The beautiful stele of Stang-an-Heol.

( Municipality of Ploudalmézeau)

48°31'11 N   4°40'48 W

Access :    Coming from St-Renan by the D68 (direction Ploudalmézeau), at a roundabout, take the D28 towards Plourin. Go through this village and continue towards Ploudalmézeau. The stele is visible on the left of the road, one kilometre after Plourin. You can park near the monument.

It is a very beautiful stele, apparently intact, which is wrongly called here Le Milliaire because for a long time it was thought to be a Roman milestone. The same name can be found for a Gallic stele in Plouigneau, near Morlaix. The stele of Stang an Heol was located a few tens of meters away towards Plourin, but was moved to this place in order to preserve and better enhance it.

It is a classic truncated pyramid of rectangular cross-section whose edges have been worked to obtain very regular cut sides. Its visible height is 1.57 m. Considering the thickness of the humus layer it is actually 1.70 m. Its section measures 70 x 70 cm at the base and 47 x 52 cm at the top.
